William “Bill” Richard Bates, 93, of Chatham, IL died at 7:08 pm, Monday, June 17, 2024 at his home. He was born August 12, 1930 in Chicago, the son of William J. and Blanche (Blush) Bates and they preceded him in death. He married Shirley A. Zeigler and she preceded him in death. He married Shirley Bradley and she preceded him in death.

Bill is survived by five children, Cheryl Castles of Springfield, Richard Bates of Louisiana, Mark Bates and Clint (Molly) Bates, both of Chatham and Glenn (Peggy)  Bates of Glenarm; 2 step children, Laurie (Bill) Sneed and Jodie McGrew; 11grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and one brother, Ken (Carlene) Bates of Springfield; one sister, Bonnie Weincek of North Carolina.

He was also preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy (Keith) Sterner.

Bill started the Illinois Bass Federation Charter and was a member of the Capital City Bassmasters for years. He was an avid Chicago Sports fan. His other interests were golfing, bowling, dancing, watching Hallmark, playing Lotto and slot machines.

Bill served in the United States Navy from 1949-1953.

He worked at L & L Heating and Air Conditioning as a treasurer/secretary for many years. He retired from the State of Illinois Department of Economic and Community Affairs (DECA).

The family will host a memorial service at 10:00 am, Monday, July 15, 2024 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 220 S. 2nd Street, Springfield, IL 62701. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery.

Celebration of life following graveside service. Location and time to be announced.
